Tea dissolves fear

24 Hours Tea x Hiroshima combines the practice of the Japanese ritual with first-hand accounts of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima. In so doing, both beauty and ugliness are made manifest. The bombing of Hiroshima is commemorated as vehemently as it acknowledges beauty, peace, equality and tranquility of mind. By promoting an acute awareness of the Hiroshima bombing of 6 August 1945 through tea ritual, alienating notions of 'us' and 'them' are diminished, the will for nuclear abolition is renewed and aspirations for peace are reinvigorated.

24 Hours Tea x Hiroshima format:

  • 36 x 30 min tea rites over 24 hours10 min walking meditation between tea rites
  • Conducted in silence
  • No food, only tea
  • The first bowl of tea in each rite is dedicated to those who suffered in the A-bombing of Hiroshima: those who melted under the atomic bomb, and those who suffered in the decision to use it on fellow human beings
  • The second bowl of tea in each rite is served to the people who join me for nuclear abolition
