Mary Buchberger

Mary Patricia Buchberger (née Hinsey), 63 of Montgomery, a beloved wife, mother, daughter, sister, co-worker, and friend passed away Wednesday, December 23, 2020. She was preceded in death by her parents Robert Sr. and Phyllis (O’Brien) Hinsey and brother Bob Hinsey Jr. She was a loving wife to Dr. Steven Buchberger and devoted mother to Dr. David Scott (Anna Pittman) Buchberger and Jessica Marie Buchberger.

Mary was born August 14, 1957 in Bay City, Texas. Her family soon moved to Colorado Springs, Colorado where Mary grew up and attended Cheyenne Mountain High School (1975 graduate). She went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in business from the University of Colorado, Boulder and later, an MBA from the University of Cincinnati. Mary’s career in corporate finance spanned nearly 40 years and included stints with various companies in Colorado, Texas, and Ohio. Mary has called Cincinnati home since 1988, and for the past 12 years has worked for Siemens as a financial controller.

Mary was born in the middle of a family of 13 children. As a child she was known for her independent spirit and strong work ethic. She played a major role assisting with the daily routine required to run a household of a dozen siblings. She worked multiple jobs throughout her teenage years, and it was during this time Mary developed her keen interest in business and finance that she carried for the rest of her life. In college, she was a proud member of the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority and remained in touch with several sorority sisters until her death. As a college graduate, she met her husband Steve while living and working in Denver. Together they spent much of their free time exploring the Colorado Rockies, hiking summer trails, skiing winter powder and visiting old mining towns. The landscapes of Colorado have always held a cherished place in Mary’s heart – especially her beloved Glenwood Springs, which served as a gathering place for many wonderful family vacations.

Mary’s main passion in life was providing and caring for her children, which she did in a spirit of unending love. She never missed a ball game or social event and was always available for advice or counseling despite significant professional responsibilities and a disciplined commitment to exercise which included three 5 AM workouts weekly. On the job, Mary was known for her attention to detail and ability to synthesize key information into clear useful financial reports. She was also a trailblazer, often serving as the only female on a corporate team of men or attaining positions previously unoccupied by women. Mary also loved to travel with her family and, in addition to regular trips to Colorado, she was fortunate enough to visit Australia, Hawaii, and most countries in Europe. Above all, Mary nurtured and cared for others. She will perhaps most be remembered for her example of generous giving and service to her family and community – an example we seek to emulate as she watches over us from heaven.

She is survived by 11 brothers and sisters: Rebecca Turner, Bill (Michele) Hinsey, Margaret (Gary) Campbell, Harry (Donna) Hinsey, Phyllis (Eric) Freyer, Betty (Joe ) Winget, John Hinsey, Jim (Sharon) Hinsey, Nancy (Courtney) Berg, David (Genevieve) Hinsey, and Mark (Jody) Hinsey. She is also survived by 25 nieces and nephews and 28 great-nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network in memory of Mary Buchberger. 1500 Rosecrans Avenue, Suite 200, Manhattan Beach, CA 90266 or online at pancan.org.
