  • Opportunity Cost: Why Diversity is Financially Critical for the Book Industry

May 30th from 12:00PM to 12:50PM (Javits Center; Room 1E11)

The publishing industry is white, straight, and physically able (Diversity Baseline Survey 2015, Lee & Low Books), and the vast majority of books published are intended for these audiences. This lack of diversity is not just a societal problem, but it is increasingly becoming a financial problem for all players in the industry. Publishers, editors, reviewers, bookstores, and libraries that ignore America's increasing diversity do so at their own financial peril.

Developed for publishing and retail decision makers, this panel features prominent and diverse voices from around the industry who will discuss how all parties in publishing, big and small, can benefit socially and financially from diversity. The session will cover a number of issues, from the current state of affairs to developing action plans for taking advantage of this opportunity.

  • Networking Session: How do You Measure Success?

May 31st from 4:45PM to 5:45PM (Javits Center; Room 1E16)

Every publisher, big and small, wants to hit the best-seller lists and win the major awards. It can also be exciting to consider additional definitions of success. How about reaching readers? Inspiring social change? Building the author's professional standing? Sending the book's creators on a book tour? Growing a tribe? Shining a light on a subject you're passionate about?

Join your fellow publishers, big and small, in this fast-paced meet-and-greet networking event. We'll challenge and expand our mental models about why we publish our list of books -- and even why we published a specific title. We'll find common ground and explore new territory in small groups that will keep shuffling -- all in a game format that comes with bragging rights and new connections! Bring your business cards and a sense of adventure.
